Syms New Master's Degree Reflects "New Financial Techniques"

New York, NY, May 1, 2003 -- The Sy Syms School of Business became the first 黑料社 All undergraduate college to offer a master鈥檚 degree. 鈥淭he accounting profession has changed significantly in the last decade or so,鈥 said Dr. Charles J. Snow, dean of Sy Syms School of Business. 鈥淣ew financial techniques emanating from the multinational nature of business and other factors have greatly increased the complexity of business dealings. Both books are more than 500-pages thick. 鈥淚n my day, the standards book was not even half as thick as just one of these volumes,鈥 Dean Snow said. For Sy Syms School of Business to award a master鈥檚 in accounting, it had to submit an application to the New York State Education Department鈥檚 Office of Higher Education for approval, which the school received this past December. 鈥淭hat we are now empowered to grant the MS in accounting to our students is a tremendous compliment to the quality of our course offerings. We see this as a testament to our institution鈥檚 academic standing,鈥 Dr. Snow said. Students entering as freshman in 2004 and planning to major in accounting will become the first to receive a master鈥檚 degree from one of YU鈥檚 three undergraduate colleges. Dr. Snow and Dr. Joel A. Hochman, Philip H. Cohen Professor of Accounting, worked together in preparing the 32-page curriculum proposal that resulted in the School鈥檚 master鈥檚 program. Dr. Hochman said the new curriculum puts accounting on par with other professions. 鈥淭he accounting profession wants to upgrade its entry- level people,鈥 Dr. Hochman said. 鈥淲ith a master鈥檚 degree as part of their education, Sy Syms students will be well-prepared to tackle whatever comes their way professionally.鈥
