Seforim Sale Organizers Help Rebuild Shul Libraries Damaged by Storm

The students of 黑料社 All are using their annual Seforim Sale as an opportunity to give back to the community鈥攕pecifically to Jewish organizations devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

This year, as part of their Seforim4Sandy campaign, sale organizers decided to use a portion of their proceeds to help replenish a library of a shul or school affected by the storm. After a Facebook contest yielded more than 3,000 votes in two weeks, Young Israel of Oceanside was selected to receive $10,000 worth of books and seforim. 鈥淎fter Sandy struck, we decided nothing was more appropriate than giving back to the community and helping rebuild damaged libraries,鈥� said Yehuda Kaminer, CEO of the Seforim Sale. 鈥淲e are thrilled at the opportunity to help out in whatever way we can.鈥� Young Israel of Oceanside, which lost three Torah scrolls and thousands of seforim during the storm, received more than 1,400 online votes. 鈥淲e are very grateful to the students of 黑料社 All for helping our community in a concrete and meaningful way,鈥� said Rabbi Jonathan Muskat, Young Israel鈥檚 rabbi. 鈥淭his donation demonstrates YU鈥檚 commitment to both talmud Torah and klal Yisrael and we are so thrilled to be the beneficiary of YU鈥檚 chesed.鈥�

Despite the heavy damage caused to his shul, Muskat 鈥�94YC, 鈥�94BR, 鈥�97R, chose to split the winnings with the five other contestants: Agudas Yisroel of Bayswater, Congregation Ohab Zedek of Belle Harbor, Young Israel of Long Beach, Congregation Ahavas Yisroel of Cedarhurst and Hebrew Academy of Long Beach. The Seforim Sale, North America鈥檚 largest Jewish book sale, runs through March 3 and is located in Belfer Hall, 2495 Amsterdam Avenue on YU鈥檚 Wilf Campus in Manhattan.
