Yael Roberts Explores Gap Between Images and Words in 鈥楥orrespondences鈥 In the last year, senior Yael Roberts has mailed 792 postcards and 144 letters. Some were addressed to old friends or people she barely knew, like famous writers and artists. Others she left in random places around New York City for anyone to find. Each one asked the same questions: 鈥淲ho or what inspires you? How do you define inspiration?鈥 yael_roberts_03The answers to those questions, as well as the many modes of communication Roberts used to ask them, form the heart of her first solo exhibition, which will run from January 15-21 at Blackburn 20 | 20, 323 West 39th Street, New York, NY. The exhibition is an installment of nine lithographic portraits created from postal art and based on the letters and diaries of historical figures as well as Roberts鈥 own correspondences with friends, artists, writers and even her own internal dialogue. Her work also focuses on the relationships between four artists and their muses in the 19th and 20th centuries: Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal, Georgia O鈥橩eeffe and Alfred Stieglitz, and Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. For Roberts, an English literature major with a minor in studio art, the project was partly about building a framework of modern creative history. 鈥淚鈥檝e constructed a way that I think society has existed for the past 200 years creatively, and I wanted to show how these four couples were examples of societal shifts and also how they talked about those shifts themselves in their writing and art鈥攈ow they articulated the relationship between artist and muse, the self and the other,鈥 she said. If Roberts鈥 work sounds like a hybrid of literary research paper and the visual arts, that鈥檚 because it is. She traces the original idea for 鈥淐orrespondences鈥 back to two separate projects in her junior year. The first, her final project for 鈥淧rinciples of Design鈥 with Associate Professor and Chair of Studio Art Traci Tullius, found her illustrating Roland Barthes鈥 post-modern essay 鈥淒eath of the Author鈥 with self-made stamps of deceased women writers. yael_roberts_06In fall 2011 Dr. Linda Shires, David and Ruth Gottesman Professor of English and Chair of the English Department at Stern, nominated Roberts to apply for the Henry Kressel Research Scholarship, which offers students the unique opportunity to craft a year-long intensive research project under the direct supervision of University faculty. 鈥淵ael Roberts arrested my attention in a 2011 interdisciplinary honors seminar on science and literature as one of the most intellectually rigorous undergraduates I鈥檝e taught in 30 years,鈥 said Shires. 鈥淪he is an unusually mature, ambitious, passionate and independent thinker with a distinctive creative vision. It has been a privilege to mentor her and exchange ideas with her.鈥 In Shires鈥 class, Roberts had already been exploring the differences in the way Victorian and Modern writers viewed concepts like the right and left brain, the self and the other, and the public and private spheres. As she wrote her proposal for her Kressel research, Roberts suddenly thought of integrating her work in both classes. 鈥淲riting and images are the two ways I express myself the most, so for me they鈥檙e really connected,鈥 Roberts said. 鈥淏ut I also like to think about the gap that exists between images and words, because though they鈥檙e similar, there鈥檚 definitely a gap. That鈥檚 what I was looking to illustrate.鈥 Over the next year, Roberts delved through archives around the city, studying the handwriting, research and diaries of the figures she had chosen and creating their portraits. At the same time, she embarked on her experiment: mailing out postcards and letters to friends and strangers alike to gauge how people communicated in the 21st century, and why. Along the way, she made an interesting discovery. 鈥淚 think the purpose of the project for me was to mourn the lack of emotion in the way we communicate today鈥攖hrough writing these letters, I was hoping to bring that emotion back to the modern world, which is oversaturated with technology,鈥 Roberts said. 鈥淏ut I ended up illustrating how emotion actually still exists in our communication. You can even argue that with technology there鈥檚 more intimacy than there was before.鈥 By the time Roberts completed her Kressel scholarship in 2013, she had created an entire body of work and wanted to share it with the world. But she needed funding. So she turned to Kickstarter, where a successful campaign financed by friends, mentors and other supporters primed Roberts for her first solo showing. Mary Creede, an instructor in art at Stern College whose company has worked on sets for Broadway productions, helped her with the logistics of installing the exhibition. 鈥淎ll of the professors are so supportive鈥攊t鈥檚 a homey feeling creating art at Stern because they鈥檙e always there, they鈥檙e always around,鈥 said Roberts, describing the art studio where she and other students do most of their work. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a fridge, there鈥檚 a microwave鈥攚e all just sort of live there. I love being able to bounce ideas off the other amazing students who are always there too.鈥 08Yael_Roberts copyThe close-knit environment at Stern has been critical throughout her college years. 鈥淗aving such small classes enabled me to form strong relationships with my professors and I was also able to get involved in great extracurriculars,鈥 said Roberts, who applied to Stern early admissions and is co-captain of its soccer team and a member of the S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program, in addition to regularly contributing to both and. As her exhibition opens this week, Roberts hopes viewers walk away from "Correspondences" with as many questions about our society and the way we communicate as she had going into it. 鈥淚 think that鈥檚 one way my Judaism has influenced me as an artist鈥攂eing Jewish makes me very interested in text, but I also think that as Jews, we鈥檙e always trying to ask more questions to learn even more,鈥 she said. And, in true Jewish tradition, she also hopes viewers will challenge the creative framework she鈥檚 constructed: 鈥淢y project illustrates how things have changed over time, but I think it also shows how in some ways, things haven鈥檛 really changed at all.
