Ferkauf Receives a $3.3 Million Grant

Dr. Jeffrey Gonzalez Dr. Jeffrey Gonzalez
Dr. Jeffrey Gonzalez, professor of psychology at and the Departments of Medicine and Epidemiology and Population Health at , announced that he and Dr. Earle Chambers, associate professor in the Departments of Family and Social Medicine and Epidemiology and Population Health, have been awarded $3.3 million over five years from the National Institutes of Health/National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to tailor the highly successful Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) for Black and Latino men with prediabetes. 鈥淭he DPP has been a landmark in behavioral research to improve health outcomes,鈥 said Dr. Gonzalez, 鈥渨ith the original trial showing that participation in a lifestyle change intervention has a significant impact on weight loss and delay/prevention of progression to diabetes. Based on these results, the DPP is now reimbursed by Medicare and many private insurance carriers with a nation-wide roll-out currently underway in various practice and community settings.鈥 However, noted Dr. Gonzalez, the original trial and various subsequent implementations have failed to reach and engage men, particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds. 鈥淥ur project will involve collaboration with Montefiore Health System and the New York City Department of Health to identify a population of men with prediabetes in various primary care practices throughout the city via searches of electronic health records. We will conduct outreach to these men and evaluate our reach, engagement and weight-loss outcomes as compared to those achieved in standard (mixed-gender) DPP classes that are being offered at these sites.鈥 The first-year total award for this project is $665,666, and the total budget for five years is expected to be over $3.3 Million. Further information is available on the . Dr. Gonzalez described himself, understandably, as 鈥渇eeling a mixture of overwhelmed and excited!鈥 See also the story .
