New York鈥檚 Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman Delivers Commencement Address; Innocence Project Receives Inaugural Cardozo Justice Award
Lincoln Center provided a beautiful backdrop for graduates and their families at the 34th commencement ceremony on June 4.
Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman, chief judge of the State of New York and chief judge of the court of appeals, was the keynote speaker on a day that included a salute to the Innocence Project, which celebrated its 20th anniversary with co-founders Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, who received the first Cardozo Justice Award from Cardozo Law Dean Matthew Diller.
鈥淵ou are graduating law school at a moment of profound change 鈥 in our society, in the legal system and in our profession,鈥 said Dean Diller. More than 450 graduates 鈥 64 with Masters of Law degrees and 390 with Juris Doctor degrees 鈥 took part in the processional at Avery Fisher Hall.
Dean Diller discussed the monumental changes that have taken place in recent years, including technological innovations that have transformed the way revolutions and social movements originate, worldwide economic competition and our political landscape鈥檚 new lexicon of terms 鈥 鈥渢he 99%,鈥 鈥淥ccupy Wall Street鈥 and 鈥渢he Tea Party鈥 鈥 all of which, he declared, 鈥渉ave profound implications for our laws and legal system.鈥
