Dual Master's Degree in Jewish Education and Jewish Studies will Provide Aspiring Educators with Professional Preparation in Methods and Content

The new dual track program will draw from the best of both graduate schools to provide aspiring Jewish educators with high-level professional preparation by combining the pedagogical teaching in Jewish graduate education offered by Azrieli with the expertise in academic Jewish studies offered by Revel. Prof. Jeffrey Glanz, Silverstein Chair in Professional Ethics & Values and director of the Azrieli master's program, and Stuart Halpern, Revel鈥檚 assistant director of student programming and community outreach, will jointly coordinate the program. 鈥淭he goal of the program is to give the Jewish teacher of the future a well-rounded and complete education in both what to teach and how to teach it,鈥 said Glanz. Azrieli offers an array of programs, including a Master of Science in Jewish Education degree, a Doctor of Education degree, as well as New York State Professional Certification programs in both childhood and adolescent education. Revel offers Master of Arts degree programs in five concentrations: Bible, Medieval Jewish History, Modern Jewish History, Jewish Philosophy and Talmud, as well as a Doctor of Philosophy degree in these areas. 鈥淚n the past, prospective students have been faced with a dilemma in that they had to choose between Azrieli, which focuses on educational methodology, and Revel, which offers immersion in content,鈥 said Halpern, a Revel graduate who is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at Azrieli. 鈥淭he new Azrieli-Revel dual master鈥檚 degree program is designed to alleviate this problem.鈥 The dual-program will enable students to earn master鈥檚 degrees from each of the two schools with a total of 54 credits, whereas in the past doing so would have required earning 66 credits.
