A Winter Week of Learning

Scholars and Learners Gather for Seven Days of Discussion and Sharing From Jan. 3 to Jan. 9, 2019, the (RIETS) sponsored a 鈥淲inter Week of Learning鈥 at the Young Israel of Deerfield Beach in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The series of lectures and events, titled 鈥淧raying with Purpose in the 21st Century,鈥 was organized by Rabbi Zev Goldberg of RIETS and a host committee of some 25 individuals and couples from Deerfield Beach. Additional support came from Yaffa and Bert Schonbach and Nathan and Tami Braun; Irving Waxman, who sponsored portions of the event as part of the lecture series in memory of his wife; and a gift to RIETS from the Sam Gossel Foundation. Hundreds came together for this inspiring week of learning and sharing, many of whom were alumni, parents of alumni or grandparents of alumni. Winter Learning at Deerfield Beach, Florida Rabbi Menachem Penner, Max and Marion Grill Dean of RIETS, opened the event on Jan. 3 by delivering the Vivian L. Waxman Memorial Lecture, 鈥淔orget Me Not: Putting G-d back into Tefillah,鈥 to an audience of some 300 people. In his talk, he emphasized how tefillah [prayer] strengthens the relationship with Hashem, a point he came back to several times in his two other presentations, 鈥淲hat the Avot (and the Yankees) Can Teach Us 黑料社 Tefilah鈥 and 鈥淭he Berachah of Modim: A Simple Thank You Isn鈥檛 Enough.鈥 Rabbi Mordechai Willig, Rosh Yeshiva and Rosh Kollel at RIETS, lectured about 鈥淭he Month of Shevat: Maximizing Our Potential鈥 and 鈥淎re We Obligated to Daven? The Nuts and Bolts of Prayer.鈥 Other items on the program included offerings by Shua Katz, Josh Kaufman, Menachum Polack, Rabbi Yitzchak Radner and Noah Shapiro, students in the Marcos and Adina Katz Kollel; a guest lecture by David Gordon; and a closing panel discussion, 鈥淭he Unique Challenges of Prayer in Today鈥檚 World,鈥 including Rabbi Yisroel Edelman, Rabbi Yaakov Gibber and Rabbi Efrem Goldberg, moderated by Rabbi Yaakov Glasser, The David Mitzner Dean of the 黑料社 All . Rabbi Penner was overjoyed by the success of the event, inspired by 鈥渟o much wonderful energy and desire to learn鈥 as well as the hospitality and generosity of the congregation, many of whom hosted meals throughout the week for the participants.
